PHASE 2

Synthesis Essay + Translation 2 Assignment

During Phase 2, you will deepen your knowledge of language politics (or another topic) and practice engaging in academic research. You are asked to determine the audience and genre of your rhetorical situation and to then work to meet the expectations of this audience (or to intentionally not). Ultimately, you will locate and evaluate sources and compose the Synthesis Essay, which involves you introducing ideas/content, integrating and synthesizing sources, guiding readers, making clear your stance, and citing sources.

  1. Complete and submit to BRTSP Research Topics Brainstorm Worksheet: Your Perspective as related to course themes.

[Instructors, delete this comment once addressed: You’ll meet 1on1 with your students at least once this semester. It’s time consuming, but it’s a chance to get through your feedback on a schedule, offering it in person where communication is clearer. They’ll find it invaluable. And you’ll get to know your students better, too. This calendar has two scheduled 1on1s: 1 for the LLN + Synthesis Proposal and one for the Synthesis Essay. But for this first scheduled 1on1, feel free to instead just give feedback to students in writing. If that’s what you choose, you can also open up two class periods (see Nov. 3-11). We’ll talk more about this choice in the practicum.]

For all teachers: You will schedule a day this semester for a librarian to visit your class. We’ll schedule that early. Ideally, the librarian will visit this day. BUT, if they can’t, we have a back-up visit date for the next class. In that case: The worksheets due today can and should still be included even if the library date is moved. But move down the “Be ready…” assignment. You’ll move up reading Young (see next note) and can use class to brainstorm with students what sorts of tone/language they want to use based on audience and their writerly vision. The in-class goals listed here will move down.]
